Birding in Brazil Anyone?

According to the Brazilian Tourism Board, there are over 2,000 recorded bird species in Brazil and the country ranks 3rd in the world in terms of endemic bird species.

Beija Flor Travel can certainly attest to the abundant birdlife in Brazil, as in April 2025, we had the opportunity to experience the Pantanal region during a 10 day scouting expedition hosted by the Adventure Travel Trade Association. We were enthralled with the wealth of knowledge shared by guides Lejania Ribeiro Malheiros (Instagram: @lejannia) and Rafael Icterus (Instagram: @rafael.icterus). Not only did Lejania and Rafael lead exhilarating excursions along the Paraguay River where we witnessed birds such as the Green Kingfisher, Smooth-billed Ani, and the Wattled Jacana but also the duo highlighted the recent devastation the biome has suffered due to deliberately set fires. It is truly amazing that despite such extensive fire damage, the flora and fauna have made such a remarkable recovery in a short period of time!

While Beija Flor is still working on improving our bird photography/videography skills, trust us when we say that the most magnificent birds we observed first-hand during this trip were the Yellow-chevroned Parakeet, Toco Toucan, and Scarlet Macaw.

During the visit to the Pantanal we also had the opportunity to meet Sharon Conçeicão who was a delegate representing Diáspora Black (Instagram: @diaspora.black). We are certainly excited about the prospect of collaborating with Sharon to ensure that as Beija Flor plans its group birding trip to Brazil, that we thoughtfully incorporate aspects of the country’s rich Afro-Brazilian culture into the itinerary.

Surely, based on this wonderful experience, Beija Flor will be adding Brazil to its future group birding trip offerings so stay tuned!
